Unless you are blessed with no maintenance skin, we all need some level of skincare maintenance. We recommend a simple morning and evening routine that will help your skin glow now and well into the future. If you struggle with other issues like dry skin, acne, dark spots, etc., you will likely need to incorporate some of the optional steps spelled out after the simple steps highlighted below.
Simple Morning Routine
- Cleanse – Refresh your skin first thing to provide a clean base from which to work
- Moisturize – Apply a moisturizer that works best for your skin type.
- Sun Protection – this can be integrated in your moisturize product or a stand-alone.
Simple Night Routine
- Makeup Removal – Remove all the makeup and let your skin breathe.
- Cleanse – Remove all remaining skin impurities.
- Spot treatment – Nightime is the best time to treat problem areas and breakouts.
- Apply night care products – our bodies heal best during sleep. Add some moisture to aid in the healing process.
Other Daytime Considerations
1) What kind of cleanser?
Oil-based cleansers would be best to start with if your skin is oily. The oil-based cleanser works in conjunction with your facial oils to break them down.
Water-based cleansers are great for removing dirt, sweat, and the oil-based cleansers if used.
Some people add a toner after cleansing to initially hydrate and protect skin. Those of you with oily skin may opt for one with an astringent (typically alcohol) to help minimize the oils.
Serums have become increasingly importand in the rapid repair of various forms of skin damage, i.e. dark spots, acne scarring, and wrinkles. There is a wide-range of products in this space and include Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and others aimed to defend against Oxidative Stress on our skin. The anti-oxidants help neutralize free-radicals and protect the skin from further damage and help repair the skin.
Serums will be applied before moisturizers.
If you use an eye cream, you would apply this next.
Next would be a good moisturizer. Opt for the lightest weight moisturizer to balance your skin type.
We cannot stress the importance of this step for everyone. Sun (UV Rays) and pollution are the two biggest factors damaging skin. If your skincare products above have an SPF of at least 15, then you may skip this, but before you leave the house, make sure you have that layer of protection.
7) Now apply makeup as desired!
Other Nightime Considerations
Detoxification can be beneficial if your skin is subjected to air pollution. The application of a clay mask will help with that once a week as well as unclog pores and balance excess oils.
Chemical (acid) peels promote cellular regenetation by stripping away some surface skin cells. Glycolic acid it the most widely used and is an effective anti-aging solution. Keep in mind it does increase sensitivity to the effects of the sun, so a good sunscreen is a must after using a peel.
Wow, that was a lot of information doesn’t cover every option, but does cover 80% and we’re all about the 80-20 rule. Remember, your skin is your largest organ. Take good care of it.
